The All India Bar Examination (AIBE) is a mandatory national-level exam conducted by the Bar Council of India (BCI) for law graduates seeking to practice law in India. It assesses the candidate’s knowledge and understanding of the fundamental principles of law and their ability to apply them in practical situations.

Exam Pattern:

  • Mode: Offline, Computer-Based Test (CBT)
  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Number of Questions: 100
  • Marking Scheme: +1 mark for each correct answer, -0.25 marks for each incorrect answer
  • Languages: English, Hindi, and 10 regional languages
  • Syllabus: 18 subjects covering various areas of law, including Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Family Law, Contract Law, Tort Law, etc.

Exam Fees:

  • General Category: ₹3,500
  • Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes/Persons with Disabilities: ₹2,500

 Admit Card:

  • The admit card will be released online on the official website of AIBE.
  • Candidates must download and print their admit card and bring it to the exam center along with a valid ID proof.

Exam Day Instructions:

  • Candidates must reach the exam center at least 30 minutes before the scheduled time.
  • They must carry their admit card, a valid ID proof, and any other documents mentioned in the admit card.
  • Electronic devices, such as calculators, mobile phones, and smartwatches, are strictly prohibited inside the exam hall.
  • Candidates must follow all the instructions given by the invigilator.


  • The AIBE results will be declared on the official website within a few weeks after the exam.
  • Successful candidates will be awarded a Certificate of Practice, which is mandatory for practicing law in India.

Additional Information:

  • The AIBE exam is conducted twice a year, usually in February and September. However, due to technical glitches in the February 2023 exam, an additional AIBE (XVIII) exam is being held on December 10, 2023.
  • Candidates who have already passed the AIBE exam are not required to take it again.
  • The BCI has announced a fee waiver for the AIBE-XVIII exam for candidates who were absent during the AIBE-XVII held on February 5, 2023, at centers in Rajkot.
